Jazz for Earth Night
The New Arts Jazztet live at The Varsity on April 22
CARBONDALE – The New Arts Jazztet will present its annual spring concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 22, in the Balcony at The Varsity Center.
Long regarded as Southern Illinois’ foremost jazz group, the New Arts Jazztet will perform a program of new originals in a variety of jazz styles – “Waltz for Left Feet,” “Surface” and “6 – 1 = 4” by Dick Kelley; “Maringa” and at least one other new tune by Isaac Lausell; a new piece by Phil Brown; and “What’s It Gonna Be?” by founding NAJ member Bob Allison.
Jazz for Earth Night will be the NAJ’s first performance in the recently renovated Balcony at The Varsity. The group is looking forward to playing in a venue that many have come to consider the premier listening space in Southern Illinois.
In addition to celebrating Earth Day 2018, the concert will also commemorate Jazz Appreciation Month, which was created by the Smithsonian Museum of American History. It is officially celebrated worldwide every April.
The New Arts Jazztet was formed in 1984 among several Southern Illinois University School of Music faculty and has been in residence at the school ever since. It has recorded on three CDs, all by NAJ bassist Phil Brown. The most recent, “Arkadia,” was released in October 2014 and climbed onto the national Top 50 Jazz Chart for radio airplay in early 2015. Current NAJ members are Dick Kelley, reeds; Bob Allison, trumpet; Isaac Lausell, guitar; Brown, bass; and Jimmy Beers, drums.
