The Varsity Center
The Varsity Center in downtown Carbondale will host an exhibit showcasing the talents of 20 artists from four Southern Illinois counties. An opening reception for the exhibit, titled “Potpourri of Painters,” will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at The Varsity Center, 418 S. Illinois Ave.
The artists, who reside in Union, Jackson, Johnson and Pulaski counties, are participants in the creative sessions offered by longtime art instructor Ellen Spalt of Cobden. Spalt assists artists who have a wide range of talent, from beginners to advanced painters. The instructional sessions take place in the Fellowship Hall of Cobden First Presbyterian Church.
Participating artists include Carol Dooley, Mary Alice Kimmel, Carolyn Hollabaugh, Peg Falcone, Judy Carter and Lee Fronabarger from Carbondale; Cobden artists are Mary Tweedy, Kendall Boysen, Dorothy Cirilla, Sheron Pearson, Rita Engbring, Ellen Spalt and Lee Spalt; artists from Anna are Barbara Boysen, Randy Bridges and Beckie Pind. The remaining featured artists are Loren Herold of Alto Pass, Rita Laminack of Lick Creek, Donna Eastman of Goreville, and Alice Wendling of Dongola.
Watercolor, acrylic, oil and mixed are the mediums of the paintings, which will be available for purchase at the gallery. The exhibit also will be available for viewing Saturday, April 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. More gallery hours will be announced soon.
